VMware is a popular virtual machine software that lets you run multiple operating systems on one physical computer. Virtualization is quickly becoming one of the most popular ways to manage servers and desktops for software development and server management. When you go for an interview that involves VMware as the hosted virtual machine environment, here are some questions you’ll probably run into at the interview process.

1. What is Hypervisor?

A: Hypervisor is the central component that runs on the main Windows machine that handles VMware instances. You can spin up new virtual machines from Hypervisor.

2. What can you do to ensure that users don’t see slower performance when new storage such as a SAN is added to the network?

A: It’s not uncommon for a company to add storage to a SAN, but sometimes users can see slower performance after migrating to the VM. The best way to fix the problem is to run a block alignment. However, mention in the interview that you need to reboot, which means you interrupt user connectivity.

3. What should you do when installing a new virus or security function on the host?

A: You can put the VMware software in maintenance mode, which still leaves the VM open to the network. Then, install the security or virus patch and reboot the main VMware host. If servers are load balanced, you can bring them out of rotation.

4. How do you know when you need to install more VM hosts?

A: VMware crews use several monitoring tools to monitor performance on the main VMware hosts. When CPU and memory resources are spiking and causing performance issues, it’s time to add more hosts to your network environment.

5. How many VM hosts have you managed in the last three years?

A: Answer this question honestly. This question is used to judge your experience. Not all employers are looking for someone with years of experience but rather a good personality and ability to learn the environment quickly.

6. How much experience do you have with other cloud hosting services?

A: Most virtualized environments work with other cloud services such as Google or Amazon. If you have any experience working with these services, explain pros and cons of VMware versus these services when you’re asked.

7. What type of scripting experience do you have?

A: Most larger companies want some scripting experience. Scripting is the process of using bash or Powershell commands to automate deployment of VMs and automate management of the consoles. List any scripting skills you have that work with VMs.

8. What type of monitoring tools do you use?

A: Windows Event Viewer and Task Manager are basic Windows monitoring components, but you’ve probably run into some third part tools. List these tools and how you use them to ensure that the VM is running smoothly.

9. What is VMware Fault Tolerance?

A: The VMware vSphere is a monitoring system that helps keep VM clients and servers free from down time. It also helps avoid data loss.

10. What type of technology does VMware fault tolerance use?

A: VMware FT uses a technology called vLockstep.
