CompTIA’s A+ is considered entry-level certification for PC computer service professionals, and serves as a great stepping-stone for beginners looking to earn higher-level certifications in the future. The exam tests a candidate’s abilities to install, maintain, customize, and operate personal computers.
There are no pre-requirements for the A+ certification, but CompTIA recommends candidates have 9-12 months of hands-on experience in the field before attempting certification.
The exam has a maximum of 90 questions that candidates must complete within 90 minutes. In order to pass, you must score 700 out of 900 possible points. Question types range from multiple choice (single and multiple response), drag-and-drops, and performance-based.
Performance Based Questions (PBQs) test your ability to solve a specific problem within a simulated environment. They are more involved than the standard multiple choice or drag-and-drop questions, and require candidates to manage their time effectively.
There are several things to note about Performance Based Questions. First, PBQs typically appear near the start of your test. The exam clock isn’t visible while you solve them, and knowing this can help you allot an appropriate amount of time to solving them. Second, if you don’t feel confident about your ability to answer a PBQ, you can mark that question for review and return at a later point in time to pick up where you left off. Finally, some PBQs allow for more than one way to achieve a correct answer, and in these instances partial credit can be received. Click here for a more detailed breakdown of PBQs.
The Department of Defense (DoD) Directive 8570 requires that anyone seeking a government job related to information security needs to receive a mandated certification. CompTIA’s A+ certification qualifies holders for the Technical Level I position. Click here for more information.
