Infosec scholarship winners announced

Awards intended to strengthen cybersecurity skills and workforce

MADISON, Wis., September 30, 2019 – Infosec and CompTIA today announced the winners of the 2019 Infosec Scholarship Program. The program provides scholarships intended for cybersecurity students and aspiring information security professionals.

The nine scholarship recipients receive three award-winning cybersecurity training courses. New in 2019, the program includes certification vouchers, thanks to a partnership with CompTIA, the world’s leading provider of IT certifications.

“Businesses big and small, governments, and organizations everywhere are struggling to find the talent they need to keep their data safe from attacks,” said Jack Koziol, Infosec CEO and founder. “We were very impressed by the quality of the applicants and excited to welcome these outstanding additions to the cybersecurity community.”

Each scholarship is valued at $13,000 and gives recipients the skills, credentials and experience needed to secure a professional-level, cybersecurity position. The scholarship winners are :

Diversity Scholarship Recipients

• Jessica Chiou — San Francisco, California
• Steffanie Schilling — Painesville, Ohio
• Samuel Williams — Jacksonville, Florida

Undergraduate Scholarship Recipients

• Michaela Adams — Aliso Viejo, California — Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University
• Benn Garrett — Stilwell, Oklahoma — Park University
• Sarah Kalupa — Elm Grove, Wisconsin — University of Wisconsin - Madison

Women Scholarship Recipients

• Tanu Kaushik — Mountain View, California
• Cynthia Reynolds — Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin
• Molly Schoenecker — St. Louis Park, Minnesota

Additionally, three Military Cybersecurity Scholarship recipients will be announced on Veteran’s Day, November 11, 2019.

Recipients will receive free boot camp enrollments and CompTIA certification vouchers plus a specialized course of the scholarship recipient’s choosing:

• CompTIA Network+ Flex Pro boot camp plus voucher
• CompTIA Security+ Flex Pro boot camp plus voucher
• Specialization course (student’s choice of online courses)

Security certifications like CompTIA’s Security+ and CompTIA’s Network+ are common requirements for many information-security roles. The Infosec 2019 Scholarship Program aims to bring awareness to workforce diversity challenges, while proactively working to reduce the number of open jobs in the cybersecurity industry.

The cybersecurity skills shortage is a growing crisis facing organizations. From September 2017 through August 2018 employers across the United States posted job openings for more than 313,000 cybersecurity-related positions, according to CyberSeek, a free resource on the nation’s cybersecurity workforce, job market and career opportunities.
