Infosec Skills Challenge: December [Hack the Holidays Edition]

  • Purple Team Web App – Web Application Firewalls Lab — 00:30:00
    • Sometimes, updating or editing code isn’t an option. In this case, a web application firewall may be a good choice. In this lab, we’ll take a look at ModSecurity, a common open-source web application firewall, to see how it does and doesn’t protect against a local file inclusion and remote code execution vulnerability in Gila CMS.

  • Secure Coding – Java Lab — 00:30:00
    • Java is a high-level, general-purpose programming language that, once compiled, can run on any Java Virtual Machine (JVM), regardless of the underlying infrastructure. Except for the Write Once, Run Anywhere (WORA) advantage, Java also provides automatic memory management, thread management, automatic garbage collection, and a powerful cross-platform library. These benefits combined have made Java one of the most preferred programming languages, especially for client-server web applications.

  • PenTest+ – Applied Nmap Lab — 00:30:00
    • A vast number of tools were developed to aid pentesters in identifying and exploiting vulnerabilities ranging from reconnaissance to scanning and persistence. Knowing which tool to use depends on the services running on the target and the vulnerabilities identified. One way to get this information is by using Nmap, a network mapper that identifies active hosts, open ports, software versions, and known vulnerabilities associated with the software.

This lab uses Nmap scans and results to provide practical examples on identifying the right tools to use based on the services running on the target machine. The categories covered include:

      ● Scanners

      ● Credential testing tools

      ● OSINT

      ● Web proxies

      ● Social engineering tools

      ● Remote access tools

      ● Networking tools

      ● Mobile tools

      ● MISC

To earn your bragging rights and not get hacked this holiday season, you’ll need to summon some important cybersecurity know-how and maybe a little magic from a certain snowman. Start out inside our PenTest+ cyber range and get hands-on with a Nmap to identify active hosts and known vulnerabilities. Once you’ve checked our first lab off your list, it’s time to see if ModSecurity is on the naughty or nice list by testing which attacks it protects against! To put a bow on this month’s Challenge, head on over to our Secure Coding cyber range to test out your secure Java skills. When you’re done, don’t forget to share the cybersecurity spirit by uploading your certificate of completion to LinkedIn and tag our @Infosec profile.
