Today is Data Privacy Day, a day we truly love here at InfoSec Institute.
Data privacy tends to be viewed through a negative lens — massive data breaches, fines from government watchdogs and stories of lost customers. But when done right, it can become a story of empowering people and organizations to respect privacy, safeguard data and enable trust.
We want to keep that positive message going well beyond today’s Data Privacy Day. Collected below are a few of our best data-privacy-related resources. We encourage you to download, print, watch and share them throughout the coming year.
1. Keep Your Personal Data Safe
Keeping your personal data safe starts with you. How much information are you exposing through social accounts and insecure phone settings? How deep is the potential treasure trove of old files stored on your devices? How does your cyber hygiene stack up against the criminals and bots trying to break into your accounts?

2. Keep Your Customers’ Data Safe
Last year’s privacy conversation was largely driven by GDPR and its May 2018 deadline. This year there’s a new law, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), and a new deadline, January 1, 2020.
With California recently becoming the fifth largest economy in the world, the CCPA is expected to have wide-reaching impact. The International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) estimates that more than half a million companies will be affected just within the U.S. — potentially driving the creation of a national law.

3. Protect Consumers’ Data Privacy Rights
The CCPA gives California residents more control over how you can use their data. It also increased powers to reprimand your organization if you do not comply with the new privacy rules.
The consumer rights under CCPA include:
- Right to know what categories of personal information are being collected
- Right to know whether personal information is sold or disclosed and to whom
- Right to say “no” to the sale of personal information
- Right to access the personal information held by an organization
- Right to equal service and price, even if any privacy rights created by the CCPA are exercised (non-discrimination)

4. Learn About the Future of Privacy
Technological growth has exploded during our lifetimes, and that expansion continues to bring more privacy issues and challenges. Consider our adoption of online resources and tools:

The fact that 89% of Internet users are “worried” about data privacy isn’t surprising. We’re rapidly moving towards a time where data, including personal and sensitive data, drives much of our everyday living.
