Computer Crime Investigators

Job Description
A computer crime investigator investigates a number of crimes that range from recovering file systems on computers that have been hacked or damaged to investigating crimes against children. In addition, computer crime investigators also recover data from computers that can be used in prosecuting crimes. Once the necessary electronic evidence is gathered, computer crime investigators write reports that will later be used in court. Computer crime investigators must also testify in court.

Computer crime investigators also work for large corporations to test security systems that are currently in place. Investigators do this by trying various ways to hack into the corporation’s computer networks. At corporations, computer crime investigators also maximize optimal computer system performance levels.

Job Duties List
1. Analyzing computer system crimes.
2. Recovering data that was either destroyed or damaged.
3. Gathering evidence.
4. Gathering computer system information.
5. Maximizing optimal computer system performance levels.
6. Reconstructing damaged computer systems.
7. Preparing expert reports on highly complex technical matters.
8. Testifying in court.
9. Training law enforcement on computer related issues.
10. Draft expert testimony, affidavits, and reports.
11. Consult with clients, supervisors, and managers.
12. Continually develop forensic skills through outside research and training.
13. Recover password protected/encrypted files and hidden information.
14. Convert recovered files and information into a format that is compatible with a corporations needs.
15. Assess software applications for design flaws.
16. Identify and recommend methods for preservation and presentation of computer evidence.
17. An ability to work and collaborate well with a team.
